Where Were You That Starry Night?

Where were you that starry night
when all the birds flew by?
Were you near the rosebush

in my garden?

Was that just the wind,

not laughter
in the violet night—
there among the trees,

the brook, and shadows?

Were those not your lovely features
in sweet silhouette?
Were those not the footsteps

I remember?

Where were you that starry night
when all the birds flew by?
Were you near the rosebush

in my garden?

Ah the exquisite pain of love's remembrance, and if it were not so painful would I still seek the experience? Lovely!
